A new trailer for Fallout: Bakersfield has dropped and it’s a fan-made project that reimagines the 1997 Fallout with a mix of retro charm and new innovation. Not a full remake of the original RPG, this mod turns the iconic, ghoul infested Necropolis into a first person shooter built on the GZDoom engine.
Headed by Alexander “Red888guns” Berezin with support from Denis Berezin, this mod has been in development for years and is finally here. It’s a gritty, post-apocalyptic world that captures the spirit of the original Fallout.

Released in 1997 by Interplay, Fallout was a pioneering RPG set in a retro-futuristic wasteland ravaged by nuclear war. Its turn based combat and isometric perspective shaped a generation of RPGs, dark humor and a morally complex world. Necropolis, a desolate city full of radiation mutated ghouls, was a haunted maze of danger. Now in 2025 Berezin, a Fallout enthusiast, has reimagined Necropolis as a fast paced shooter. Using GZDoom, an enhanced version of the 1993 Doom engine, he’s combined Fallout’s atmosphere with Doom’s action, creating a hybrid that feels like a lost cousin of both.

GZDoom is the foundation of the project and it’s a great choice. The original Doom, a first person shooter from id Software, redefined gaming with its fast paced, mod friendly core. GZDoom builds on that, adding high resolution textures, dynamic lighting and smoother mechanics while preserving the retro look of 2D sprites in 3D environments. Berezin uses this to recreate Necropolis with pixelated, post-apocalyptic grit – crumbling buildings, flickering lights and blood stained floors.

The trailer is great because it’s Fallout. A radio crackles, a “Please Stand By” screen flashes and you’re in Necropolis, mowing down ghouls with Fallout’s weapons. Animations are smooth for a fan project, gore and dismemberment add a nice touch. The protagonist is fighting Harry, a super mutant boss from the original game, so it seems like the mod is telling a focused story rather than a new one.

Fallout: Bakersfield is 60% complete, environments and scenery is 80%, weapons, UI and creatures is 50% and 30%. No release date yet, a ??/??/202? flickers towards 2027 before disappearing. Berezin is also working on a Fallout RPG for New Blood Interactive and balances professional and passion projects, so this non commercial mod will be free when it’s done.
