Billionaire hedge fund manager Ken Griffin paid $44.6 million USD for a stegosaurus fossil called ‘Apex’ at a Sotheby’s auction, shattering the previous record of $31.8 million a well preserved T-Rex fossil commanded.
Apex stands 11 feet tall and measures 27 feet from nose to tail, which makes it the finest Stegosaurus skeleton to ever come to market. It was meticulously excavated by commercial paleontologist Jason Cooper back in October 2022. He embraces the philosophy of “minimal intervention”, which means his team expertly highlighted Apex’s awe-inspiring natural beauty while preserving critical contextual details, including fossilized skin impressions as well as its cervical ossicles.

This is an incredibly important discovery, and I don’t know of another stegosaurus that matches the size and quality of this one. The quality of the fossil is excellent. Even impressions of the skin have been preserved,” said Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s senior vice president, and global head of science and popular culture.
