LEGO Ideas The Goonies Set 21363
LEGO has released a plethora of ships over the years, everything from pirate galleons that scream adventure to ghostly vessels from spine-tingling tales. None of them, though, have quite got the allure of the Inferno, that decidedly unsavory old hulk from The Goonies – now a sprawling 2912-piece set, number 21363, that drags the whole underground escapade right into your living room. This build, released under the Ideas banner, where fan ideas are transformed into legitimate products, is a tribute to an 80’s film about youngsters seeking pirate plunder through booby trap-filled caves.

Vaggelis Ntezes – aka the 3D artist Delusion Brick online – came up with this as an entry for LEGO’s 2024 “If We Could Turn Back Time” contest. He grew up in the 80s, piling up pirate-themed sets while the movie played non-stop as the background noise to his childhood. What he dreamed up was an amalgamation of the film’s frenetic energy, smothered in all sorts of display worthy details – like a cutaway view of the caves slotted right up against the old ship’s weathered frame, complete with rope ladders snaking through the shadows. LEGO’s design team took that blueprint and added a few interactive elements, like as a switch that causes boulders to roll or keys that activate trapdoors, to give the set some extra punch.

When you turn the model around, the Inferno is fully battered: a brown-hulled vessel fighting her way out of the depths of the ocean for centuries, with bent prow scarred, masts standing high from the deck, and torn cream sails flapping around like lost flags. The ship lies wedged into a hidden sea cave, sealed by the British armada hundreds of years ago, at a 90-degree angle, its stern seamlessly melding into the craggy walls as if the tide had dragged it in and left it there for good.

Inside, it becomes much more complicated, similar to the insane labyrinth in the film. You begin at the Fratellis’ decrepit hideout, where a blender whirs menacingly next to Chunk, tied up and spilling the beans. You continue climbing through the twisting tunnels, passing a boulder with a skull guarding the path. There’s a swinging rope bridge across a subterranean creek that goes to the notorious bone organ; press the appropriate keys and it’ll go, but press the wrong keys and the walls will collapse. Data’s devices are on his belt, and Mouth is clutching his treasured hairbrush tightly, as if it were a lucky charm. These small scenes stack together to form a continuous, seamless diorama that measures just over 62 centimetres long and 36 centimetres tall, allowing the minifigures to move from one near call to the next without ever leaving the dining table.

Sloths corner pulls at the heartstrings of the film, a rundown hideout crammed with pilfered chocolate bars and a flickering projektor screening those epic swashbuckles – and there in the dimmest corner is the one legendary beast that the cutting room floor, but still haunts the minds of every Goonie fan . The Copper Bones key lifts a hidden panel or two, and whoa – there’s a whole underground tunnel with spike pits or Willy’s dazzling loot just a floor up. It all links together in the story’s rhythm – a confession here, a hair-raising escape there, till the gang finally stands amidst the doubloons and treasure, the curse of the pirate lifted at last.

Twelve Goonies crowd the cast of mini-figures, each one screaming out the 85 vibe. Mikey takes the lead with his big wide-eyed determination, standing by Brand with his steady grip and Andy’s always-be-ready flashlight pose. Stef keeps them all grounded with her no-nonsense stance, while Chunk just radiates the bulk of the run ahead. Data pops with his inventor flair and outrageous false teeth, and don’t even get me started on Mouth – he’s just grinning from ear to ear, always chattering away. And then there’s Sloth limping along in his beat-up Superman tee but now rocking a pirate hat and bandana – what a beauty! The Fratellis counter with Jake’s sly grin, Francis’s battle-hardened mug and Mama’s towering – and totally wild – hair – all new molds for her this time around. One-Eyed Willy hangs in the background as a skeletal captain with a gleaming eyepatch, a grim reminder of the price this treasure came at.
