On August 27, M. Night Shyamalan posted a short note and a fifty-six-second clip. Starting my YouTube page today, he wrote. He sat on a small bench outside his office. A tree grows there that he planted after his father died earlier this year. After thirty years making movies he wanted to undo stigmas sitting in his head and in other people’s heads.
His first real upload, titled ‘This is my first YouTube video,’ clocked in at two minutes and change. He was concerned that talking so directly would cause him to lose something important. He claimed he had no idea what he would show or what viewers would show to him in response. Joy, he said, lies in stepping into the unknown, and so he invited himself and you to do so together. Sunday brought him 16 minutes in the stables and Night Diaries’ first episode, Signs. He took up an old journal that he hadn’t opened in 25 years, the journal that Carl Gottlieb’s Jaws Log had earlier urged him to start writing in on every shooting day. Pages from September 2001 sat in his hands.

One entry is dated September 11. Today the world changed. I can’t stop crying. That is all he wrote that day. Signs was still in the early stages of production. Oh, and he had forgotten that Rory Culkin arrived a little late. Mark Ruffalo had already left and been replaced by Joaquin Phoenix, and before Mel Gibson arrived, Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood had both been sought. As he read this, he was struck by Mel Gibson’s description of him as the “rarest kind of filmmaker.” Reading that now just makes Shyamalan go, “Wow, that’s heavy duty.”
He also discovered a tired note from day 38, with 8 days left on the shoot. The creature’s hand underneath the cupboard is real and a little disturbing, but the dailies are looking good. Within a few days, the page had surpassed 100,000 subscribers, and the first video received a million and a half views. His titles were casual, with no grand polished series bible to speak of. He sits, reads, and then stops when a sentence from twenty years ago hits him a little harder than he expected.
He has not yet made any commitments regarding release dates. He still has drawers filled with journals from The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. Next up is Remain, a film he co-wrote with Nicholas Sparks that will be released in theaters on February 5th, 2027, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal as an architect whose life is flipped upside down when he encounters a woman he can’t quite place.
For the time being, the camera is focused on a man who has spent three decades concealing his job behind completed films. He is allowing visitors to watch him sit in a farmhouse from 2001 and read his own handwriting, including expressing fear about the upcoming upload. He posted the Signs diary with a simple hope. Perhaps something in it can teach you a thing or two.
