Photographers during World War II shot the battle in black-and-white due to the high-cost of color film, but there were a few that managed to slip through the cracks. Many of them can be found in a book published by the Imperial War Museums (IWM), which were captured between 1942 and 1945. Lithium-ion Battery Recycled Glass

UC Riverside researchers have developed a low-cost method of turning glass bottles into functional lithium-ion batteries that store nearly 4-times more energy than conventional batteries. The team, headed by Cengiz Ozkan, professor of mechanical engineering, and Mihri Ozkan, professor of electrical engineering at UC Riverside, used a 3-step process. First, they crushed and grounded the glass bottles into a fine white powder. Next, the silicon dioxide is converted into nanostructured silicon, and lastly, the silicon nanoparticles get coated with carbon. Future applications include: extending the range of plug-in hybrid electric / electric vehicles, and providing extra power with fewer charges to laptops, cell phones, and other mobile devices. DARPA Tern Drone

DARPA’s Tern is basicaly a tailsitter drone that reinvents Convair’s XFY-1 aircraft’s technology from 1951. It seeks to greatly increase the effectiveness of forward-deployed small-deck ships such as destroyers and frigates by enabling them to serve as mobile launch and recovery sites for specially designed unmanned aerial systems (UASs).
