The teaser trailer for Return to Silent Hill, the third film and a direct adaptation of the Silent Hill 2 game, is out now and we can’t wait for its theatrical release on January 23, 2026. Christophe Gans, who directed the first Silent Hill (2006), takes us back to a world of creeping dread and familiar terrors.
It opens with James Sunderland, played by Jeremy Irvine, waking up on a foggy street with the Silent Hill sign in the background. Ash is drifting through the air, with a ghostly haze that mirrors the game. Quick cuts follow, James is running through decaying industrial corridors, walls streaked with grime and rust. The cinematography is tight and claustrophobic, James is trapped. A burning building flashes on screen, flames licking at the edges of the frame as James runs away – an image that feels both chaotic and deliberate, the town itself is alive and conspiring against him.

No Silent Hill film would be complete without its monsters and the teaser delivers. Creepers, those insect-like creatures, swarm in a brief but unsettling shot. Nurses, those jerky and blank faced franchise staples, appear in a flash. Then the trailer’s climax: Pyramid Head.

Christophe Gans is back after nearly two decades and has a deep respect for Silent Hill 2. In a May 2025 statement he called the game a “masterpiece” and promised a film for the fans. The screenplay, co-written with Sandra Vo-Anh and William Josef Schneider, is based on the game’s story: James, shattered by the loss of his wife Mary, receives a letter saying she’s alive in Silent Hill. As he searches he finds a town warped by an unknown evil, populated by creatures born from his psyche. Gans has cited P.T., the cancelled Silent Hills teaser, as an inspiration so we can expect a mix of classic and modern horror.

Jeremy Irvine (War Horse, Treadstone) is James Sunderland, weathered and vulnerable. Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw, X-Men: Dark Phoenix) is Mary Crane (a name change from the game’s Mary Shepherd-Sunderland, possibly to avoid confusion). Evie Templeton reprises her role as Laura from the 2024 Silent Hill 2 remake. Akira Yamaoka, the series’ composer, scores the film. Producers are Victor Hadida, Molly Hassell and David Wulf. Financing from Davis Films and Ashland Hill Media Finance.
