Despite their rivalries on the business side of things, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have been great friends, so much so that once news of the Apple legend’s passing was announced, he immediately released this statement (quoted below). I’m truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs’ death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work. Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives.

The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it’s been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

You’ve seen what the offices of Blizzard and Google look like, now here’s a sneak peak at some parts of Microsoft’s Redmond campus. The “grounds comprise over 300 acres, with about 40 buildings housing nearly 14,000 offices.” Videos after the break. Click here for more pictures.

Common employee areas such as the Meeting Rooms building are situated throughout. The cafeteria has an al-fresco dining area with a rocky waterfall. One Microsoft Way also serves as a tourist attraction.

Microsoft unveiled Windows 8 Tablet Edition today, and it comes complete with a “Metro Style UI”. This equates to “live tiles, hidden menus and controls, large, flashy graphics, bold white type, [and] multi-touch gestures.” Video after the break. Click here for more pictures. Sure this may not be the final build, or anywhere near it, but for whatever flaws it may have, the UI being offered in this developer preview is really something special.

If you don’t count the HP startup screen, Windows 8 purportedly boots into a usable interface in just 2-seconds. Throw in the posting screen, and you’ll be ready to go in under 10-seconds. Microsoft will officially reveal Windows 8 at its BUILD conference next week. Continue reading for the video.

Microsoft achieves this quick boot by writing the kernel sessions to disk, essentially putting the computer in hibernation mode rather than shutting it down completely. This improves boot time by 30-70% since the computer doesn’t have to load all the drivers and services every time.

KDDI has officially unveiled the Toshiba-Fujitsu IS12T, the world’s first Windows Mango-based phone. It features a Qualcomm’s MSM8655 processor, 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen, and a 13.2-megapixel camera. Continue reading for a video and more pictures.

The pink gizmo packs a 13.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and has a plentiful 32GB of flash storage for housing whatever content you’d fancy toting around. The usual Bluetooth (2.1 + EDR) and WiFi (802.11b/g/n) suspects are also onboard.
