The guys over at GadgetMadness show us how not to use a 50,000 volt capacity Tesla coil. Video clip after the jump.
We could have told you more about how it works and discussed the brilliant scientist who invented it, but noooooo instead we use it to set things on fire, create sparks and illuminate lightbulbs wirelessly. (Don't try this at home.)

What is so special about this? This cheap voltage generator is like over 100 years old.
3
Yeah, boooring.
4
i do that all the time to light cigarettes.
5
My has more voltage!!

Do you people have any idea the amount of Engineering that goes into one of these things? Try building one, then try understanding how it works, and maybe you will be impressed. Thanks to people who have designed these, albeit much larger ones, aircraft can now survive lightning strikes. On the other hand, maybe if it did wheelies and made farting noises you would be impressed.

Pretty awesome, I have a 10,000 tesla, and it doesn't quite get that long of bolts, but I still do that stuff... though I usually use a knife :-X

Thats interesting! Reminds me of Red Alert 2. Hehe
12
I get to show kids how those work and do tricks with flash paper with one at work. Very cool.

If you don't like it, then don't comment. I bet half of you guys would kill yourselves with one of those... it's pretty obvious your negative input is because you want to gain some negative attention. If it was 20 minutes about engineering and science we'd recieve a 'let's see you blow shit up with it now'

I hate teslas, they are so gay. I hate electricity, it is so gay. I hate blog web sites, they are so gay. I hate the internet, it is so gay. I hate computers, they are so gay. I hate, well that about sums it up.

The coolest part that no one has mentioned is that the person was holding the penny with their bare hand. Most large Tesla coils have too much current to attempt that.

I think this thing is kool even though im not sure what it is... and Phoenix is a funny bastard..

That's really cool. I've actually done some reading on Tesla and he's quite an interesting character. He used a device about the size of an alarm clock to shake an entire city block using resonant frequencies. Towards the end of his life his ideas were getting weirder, such as a way to make walls of light (which he never created). Most of his ideas were only known by him and not written down so we can't tell how many were actually sound. Unfortunately, because he was no business man, many of his ideas were patented by other people before he had a chance and he died alone and poor.

Woooooooooooooow, that thing blows, all it is, is like a big thingy that makes like electric thingys, duhh its not that kool. I bet if i took a banana and ate it I would be able to fly or like jump off a buillding or sumthing. I wish I was a fishy, that way i could moo all day long. Did u no that if u take vinegar and ummmmm......i forgot the other one, but if u put them togheter like it makes an eruption, but its so not intersesting UNLESS u put food coloring in it!!! Im out C YAH, Senior Cow

Hey brian, heres and idea. Blow me.

These coils are very amazing but what most of you have misunderstood is it is not just some voltage generator. it was invented to be much like a radio that broadcasted current through the air like radio frequencies so everything woul dbe wireless and never require a battery. the problem however is that there was no way to adjust the amount of current or valtage the object on the distant end recivied and there was no way to tuenrn the object off without removing power from the Tesla Coiland so unfourtunatly they are mostly only used for specail efects and things of that nature. but i think it might intrest most of you that tesla coils were used in the philadlphia project where they (the government) tried to teleport a battleship from lake erie to the coast of florida and ended in tragity when the men aboard the ship became infused with the ship very disturbing...
