Developed by Boston Dynamics for military purposes, the BigDog is a four-legged robotic mule that can carry over 88 pounds. It's very sturdy as it can withstand a kick to the body without falling over. Video after the jump.

Thats great, now we can send 100,000$+ machine to poverty stricken areas and have it carry stuff for them!

I felt some kind of Terminator robot rebel feeling when he kicked it. Sure he just did it to demononstrate it's amazing balance, but still, it did feel ominous, and i think robot's of the future will need to be very durable as humans love to abuse things of even the utmost usefulesness.

this is a major developement thats why its a big deal, it itself maynot be so practical but now they have the ability to have a walking machine that can adapt itself in realtime. in a few more years i bet this technology will be used for other things that are more useful but damn just imagine if that thing was running around with a turret mounted on top just killing people left and right.

The concept is great, but how much must that thing weigh? It's got to carry more than it's own load to be anything close to usefull. The balancing tech is amazing though!

Yeah, there is. Something WITHOUT LEGS! Who care's if it can prance around? Put some tank treads on it and it can carry a lot more than 80 pounds.
