Motorola's DynaTAC (Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage) 8000X was the world's first commercially released mobile phone -- making its debut in 1983 at the price of $3,995. Click here for more pictures.

The company spent over $100-million and 15 years developing the technology. At 13 x 1.75 x 3.5 in., the DynaTAC 8000X featured an LED display and up to 30-minutes of talk time when fully charged. It was available in three different color combinations, which included tan/gray, tan, and dark gray.

This is clearly not the first mobile phone to use cellular technology .. There were much larger versions of this, the 8000X actually being an upgrade to a smaller and less power hungry version of the original motorola phone introduced in 1973 not 1983 (the 8000x was 10 years later) http://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/it/2007/3/2007_3_20.shtml This article has caption stating the dates as 1983 (correct) for the 8000x, but there were commercially available dynatacs before that. Then there were lots of bag phones going under model numbers such as the Motorola 2900, M800BP (which the BP stood for BAG PHONE) marketed even in your local radio-shack ... back when radio-shack was cool (or even relevant) , which paralleled that entire line .. I have one of the original Dynatacs (prior to the 8000x) and if I can dig it out of the garage tomorrow I'll post its model number for what its worth.

The large object in question is a 800S which is the big-brother to the 8000X.
