FOLED - Flexible OLED Display

We have seen the future of displays, and it's "FOLED," which basically are "organic light emitting devices that are built on flexible substrates such as plastic or metallic foil." Video demonstration after the jump.
FOLED displays can offer significant performance advantages over LCD displays that are typically built on rigid glass substrates and contain a bulky backlight

That is sick! Too cool. It's not a fake, look at the reflection in the electronic ribbon, that would be tough to fake. Here's to the future...freakin' commercials on my cereal boxes. :-)

I've dealt with this company and seen this (and the transparent TOLED model - way cooler) in person. They're absolutely real. The impressive part isn't the display itself (you can buy OLED screens from Osram.com if you want - see Pictiva series), but the fabrication technology. These screens are actually printed with an inkjet printer. Though much more complex than your home printer, the technology is the same.

...and so it begins. Not bad for only 16 years since results of the first common OLED device structure were published. On a side note, flexible, transparent sheets of carbon nanotubes are also being researched for use as anodes in FOLEDs.

Notice that the radius of curvature is about 10". This means that it is not suitable for a handheld device (it would have to be 20" in diameter). Also, the image was monochrome. It'll be a few more years.

One of my friends is working on this for her grad studies. This is definately real... I learned some of the technology in some of my Materials Science and Engineering classes at the University of Toronto.
