MIT researchers are back at it again, like usual, and have unveiled their latest project: an autonomous plane that can even avoid obstacles. That’s right, “using only on-board sensors, a laser, and a basic Intel Atom processor, the aircraft is able to power itself.” Continue reading for a video and more information.

It covered three miles of distance and managed to avoid obstacles despite coming a few centimetres within them.Currently, the plane’s lasers can only see a two-dimensional picture of the environment. Therefore, MIT researches have provided the plane with an accurate digital map of its environment. For it to truly be autonomous, and work in the real world, researchers need to equip the plane with the ability to map its own environment.
