Phoenix Motorcars has developed what could possibly be the perfect electric car. Classified as a Sport Utility Truck (SUT), this vehicle "can cruise on the freeway at up to 95 m.p.h. while carrying five passengers and a full payload." One more picture after the jump.
The Phoenix Motorcars SUV will be introduced in late 2007, having a range of 130 miles, and can be recharged in less than 10 minutes with an off-board charging unit or trickle-charged overnight when plugged into a 220V power source, similar to the SUT. The estimated cost to recharge the battery pack is a small fraction of equivalent gasoline costs

Phoenix is currently working on an expanded battery pack that will allow a 250 mile range, still permitting a 10 minute charge and available in late 2007

Why are "electric cars" always so unattractive? Do they want us to buy them? The best idea here is to create a regular, appealing sedan or SUV. SUT's are a waste of time. Only a certain type or number of people would think about buying a car that looks like that. Take the Prius, it's ugly! I don't care how much you spend on innovation for lower emmissions and gas mileage, but please, put a little more cash and time into design. If you want everybody to buy your car, you need to design a car for everybody. Places to start: Accord, Camry, 300, and Ford 500. SUV's - there really is only one, Chevy Tahoe.

Roach: Beuty is in the eye of the beholder. Did you know that the Ford F150 truck is the most sold vehicle in the US? I can't understand why, because AFAIK most Americans don't live on a farm, where that thing belongs. I do agree with you that I'd like electric cars to look like regular cars. I like the Honda Civic and Accent hybrids because they look just like regular cars. My wife on the other hand, as well as many of my coworkers really like the futuristic looks of the Toyota Prius.

The question that needs to be asked is "What is the lifetime cost of the vehicle, including replacement of the battery pack?" Without a sales price plus maintenance cost to compare to gasolibe powered vehicles, the relevance of this vehicle can't be determined. If it costs $250k, nobody will buy it and it is irrelevant. If the battery pack dies in three years, and costs $15k to replace, few will be sold and fewer still will sell after this becomes well known. That's still better than irrelevant, in that it will teach people "don't buy electric cars" (even those that only heard about the problem). Whether or not that is a good lesson to learn is a matter of opinion/debate.

This SUT is meant for a fleet vehicle, and cost around $50,000, so it's a proper truck or utility vehicle, rather than an SUV which is pretty useless for carrying cargo and use commercially. The battery is supposed to last 13-20 years because it uses a new nano battery material which doesn't get strained like traditional lithium-ion batteries during charge and discharge. It's been tested to 20,000 recharge cycles. A normal lithium ion battery can do about 1000 cycles. I'm sure we will see this battery in normal sized electric cars in the future. Saying no one will buy it is rubbish. People will buy anything. Even $100-200k on a sports car that doesn't do much except look good and is fun to drive. It really depends on your needs.

There's a good presentation here which summaries the new battery technology: http://www.altairnano.com/documents/AltairnanoEDTAPresentation.pdf

[...] Check out pictures of what Phoenix motors is calling “the perfect electric car.” A ten minute recharge sounds pretty impressive. Not your grandmother’s SUV.   [...]
