If you still happen to have your old nintendo 64 laying around pop in a game called "Shadow Man," turn off the lights and be prepared to stay up all night playing because you won't be able to sleep.

F.E.A.R. Condemed and Resident Evil 4 should have definatley been on this list

Man! No Half-Life? That game was downright terrifying to begin with... Especially when you're totally happy when the military guys show up... Then feel the dark brooding depression of knowing you've got a new enemy.

The list.. could've used a little work. F.E.A.R. not being there was just one problem. System Shock 2 should've been much higher. (At least over Doom 3 as Doom 3 borrowed heavily from it.)
Resident Evil (the franchise) should've been number 2 if not 1. (I haven't played SH, so I cannot comment on it one way or the other.)

I definately agree with Silent Hill as number one.. I don't personally think that Eternal Darkness was that scary, though it had some neat concepts. RE4 most certainly belongs on this list, though... stupid chainsaw..

Definitely Shoulda had F.E.A.R. and Painkiller on the list, the abandoned Asylum level in Painkiller had me jumping at everything!

Nice to see Alien vs. Predator from the Jaguar make the list. That was a truly scary game given the level of technology at the time. It's the first time I can remember actually being scared by a video game, aliens would sometimes wait behind you until you turned around or be lurking around corners, excellent game.

What no ET for the Atari? Now that is a horror that should be inflicted on no one.

I'm not surprised FEAR isn't on the list. It was a sub-par, repetitive FPS with very little scare factor.

"What's scarier than a haunted asylum"
Well you know, I think I can answer that.
It would be a burned-out former asylum that served double duty as an orphanage (oh yes) where the player is followed by the disembodied voice of a dead orphan.
This would be none other than the mission "Robbing the Cradle" from the game Thief: Deadly Shadows. Since it was only one mission it didn't stand a chance of reaching this top ten, but the combination of creepy architecture, piercing sounds and dead things scared me more than Doom3 in it's ENTIRETY. And that's saying something.

I personally found Doom 3 to be very irritating. The graphic rendering is worlds better than Doom 1 or 2, but you spend so much time getting lost that you lose the whole atmosphere of fear. I personally rate Doom 1 as much more terrifying, mediocre graphics and all, largely do to its sound.

Personally, I'm surprised Polybius didn't make #1. I haven't played it since I was in Portland in the early 80s, but I still wake up screaming and have seizures due to the effect it had on me.

Shadowman is seconded. That game ruled, and was creepy as hell.

I thought, Doom 3 was scary the first time around. Also, Silent Hill is up there too, I also heard Fatal Frame is pretty realistically scary.

Silent hill wasn't so much scary as it gave me massive feelings of anxiety... definitely creepy. I'm disappointed Undying wasn't in this list. That game scared me... Doom 3 not really scary though.
