Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have developed a new method of converting a single 2D image into a 3D scene. Video clip after the jump.
The transformation is accomplished by teaching the computer to spot visual cues to differentiate horizontal and vertical surfaces in outdoor scenes. For example, the sky is always blue and cars will likely be resting on flat grounds

its not true 3d.. give me 10 minutes i can do the same thing. all it is is planting the photo on a flat 3d model. you then bend the model at certain points to give it a true "3d" feel. basically, you will never see beyond the photo, therefore it cannot be a true 3d. the train in the begining you will never see the other side of, nor is the train a model, just a modified photo.

again this is something if you understand how its works its not difficult to also make this. only thing is they call it automatic but to make this work you would 1st have to place lots of points on corners and conect this to each other other wise the computer will never know the image is build up. kinda same conclusion as Ryan

Ryan: It's not a complete scene where every angle is visible. But it's not 2d anymore, and thats the whole point. Jasper: Not difficult? For a human, no. For a piece of software, yes. You say: "only thing is they call it automatic but to make this work you would 1st have to...". Wrong. The whole process is totally automatic. Try for yourself: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dhoiem/projects/popup/index.html

Daniel: Humans create software. All the Dev's had to do is create a program that isolated certain light/dark points. Ever heard of parralax and Bumb-mapping in games? same sort of thing. the software isolates light/dark points and changes the model to reflect bumps and recesses where they would be in real life.

thats not a hard task to acomplish using photoshop, and its not true 3d. It's cool that they made software to do it automatically, but i dont see any value in this
7
that shit cant be done automaticlly how the heck would it know where to make verticies... i dont beleive it.
8
well, programs out there aready do this, it's used a lot for making matte paintings in movies look more real and not pasted on.
9
Looks exactly like the Canoma product I used on the Mac about 6-7 years ago, although it was far from automatic.

i disagree, it is as 3d as the photo allows, therefore its 3D I wish it outputted textures+3dsmax models though! :D

Ryan you obviously don't understand, are you trying to say that if they took a camera and moved it around in the same way they did using the photo that you wouldn't consider that 3d? Just because you can't see the other side doesn't mean it is not 3D, don't be stupid. The automatic part is that the software discovers the angles and z axis locations AUTOMATICALLY, without points needing to be placed or values needing to be set. Essentially the software separates the z-axis from the y-axis so that it can properly plot plains and then re-textures the plains the same way any 3d software does. This is actually VERY VERY useful, for instance a vision system could then analyze an image with 3 dimensions making it FAR easier to separate objects and to create more accurate 3D pattern matches.
