According to FOX News, the FBI can use your cell phone's microphone to listen in on any conversation, even when the phone is turned off. What are your thoughts? Video report after the jump.
"using your cell phone's tracking device"
for one, ALL cellphones I have used and most of those I have seen do NOT have a tracking device. They may be tracked through triangulation, but the BS starts at this point.
"activate the microphone [...] when the cellphone is turned off"
it's funny, cuz i can barely get my calendar to function correctly, so excuse me if I'm a bit doubtful of the manufacturer's capability to make a cellphone that can remotely turn on only the microphone whilst not transmitting data (which is what a device does when it's OFF if it follows the FCC's rules).
So I personally don't envision all manufacturers to secretly have built cellphones that bypass this for FBI's sake. Especially since there's not many American cellphone makers.
And that was the case, wouldn't word get around already?

That alot of bull. That's like people worrying about people hacking your computer when its not on or connected to a modem. Yes they can track you when its on but if your phone is off, they can't do that.

It would be possible if you hacked the firmware in the phone so that it seemed to be off even though it's not. That would require access to the phone at some point though. And the user would probably notice that the phone drains the batteries in a couple of hours instead of a week...

It's been known for quite a while that you can track a cellphones location while it's off as long as the battery is inside. The reason is it's still connected to the cell network. I've had problems with my cell and the phone company told me to remove my battery so the phone could disconnect from the network, then replace the battery to get a fresh connection, which always fixed the problem. To turn on the mic and listen in may very well be possible, I wouldn't be surprised. If you are on the run or under surveillance, you should keep the battery out of your phone all the time. Or just thrown your phone onto a moving truck... that should keep them occupied.

If any one comes across this thread again,
romanu said that it would be breaking the FCC’s rules allowing a phone to be connected even when its ment to be off, this is not true the FCC’s rules say that it cannot transmit when off, but it can receive. All you do is send the wake on ??? (like wol) code, and the phone connects...
