At a recent management policy briefing, Satoru Iwata mentioned that the Wii development kit will cost less than $2000 -- meaning third party games galore. First picture of Wii dev kit above.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata along with the Board of Directors answered many questions at a corporate management policy briefing held last week which revealed that the price of the Wii development kits would now cost as low as $1,732. Iwata expects to increase funding for research and development to prepare for launch.

What is a "development kit?" I've not heard of this term before.
2
A development kit is a bunch of tools used by third party companies to develop, test and produce games for a system (in this case the wii)

And comparing the pricing to that of previous gen console development kits, this is dirt-cheap.

So... is $2K a very small amount for a dev-kit? how much does/did the PS2(/PS3?), GC, XBox &360 dev-kits cost???

I just want to add: Ok this means two things: A. We are going to see ALOT, and I mean ALOT of games on the Wii. With only $1,732 investment, many people will attempt to create their own games for personal profit. B. We are going to see ENOUGH really really crappy games by people who simply are going for quick profit. Either way, this will be an extremely interesting Next-Gen war. My oppinion Xbox 360>Wii>PS3

PS2 Dev kits cost around £20000 when PS2 was launched. PS3 ones most likely are far more.

where can i buy one ?

Well I know for a fact that the PS2 Dev kit 'TOOL' cost, a cool $20k, and I don't mean kilobytes. So the Wii dev kit is a steal. Hope their developer docs are better than PS2's.

This is what i got from Nintendo when I inquired about their Development kits. Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo, From time to time we hear from our fans with programming experience who wish to acquire development kits for purposes of game development. While we applaud your desire to develop software for our systems, Nintendo's development kits are only made available to established game developers. This means that you must have a stable business organization (adequate office facilities, equipment, personnel and financial resources) in order to ensure a secure and effective environment for working with its publisher, be it Nintendo or a third-party licensee. Also, you must have demonstrated the ability to develop and program excellent software for Nintendo video game systems or for other video game or computer systems. Sincerely, Nintendo of America Inc.Dervin Camden
