Approximately 1,500 drones were used to put on a breathtaking show in Shenzhen, China to celebrate the annual Dragon Boat Festival. These drones were programmed to form a giant flying dragon above the city, paying homage to Qu Yuan, a famous poet who perished in the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period (475–221BC).
How do these performances work? Typically, these light shows utilize fleets of small quadcopter drones, with each one sporting a bright LED light that can be turned on or off, as well as change color when necessary. It also helps that these drones are extremely light, since they do not have any cameras or other equipment. For example, Intel’s Shooting Star drones weigh in at just 330g, which is just slightly heavier than a jar of jam.
