Inventor Matthew Perks of DIY Perks has built a modern projection TV with near infinite contrast, and using only upcycled parts. What do you need? An old, yet functional, HD projector and an LCD screen.
Perks used an old LG TV with a broken backlight and then removed its hardware components, including the LCD panel, for use in a new chassis. Next, a very thick diffusion sheet was added to cover up the lensed LEDs to ensure the projector illuminates the LCD panel uniformly. The base is essentially a painted MDF panel with the hardware mounted underneath. One other technical step is opening up the projector and removing its color wheel, thus turning effectively it into a very bright backlight.

I know there used to be DLP TVs, i never saw them myself but my husband’s old work had some and they were supposedly really good for the era but never caught on. Using one as a backlight is next level wow,” said one commenter.
