Boston Dynamics wishes you a happy holidays with their Spot, Stretch and Atlas robots. One thing that most people don’t know is that Boston Dynamics was founded by Marc Raibert in 1992 and a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
That’s right, it was originally known as the Leg Laboratory, Raibert’s research lab at MIT and Carnegie Mellon University. Early contracts included one for the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) to replace naval training videos for aircraft launch operations with interactive 3D computer simulations. Later on, Boston Dynamics partnered with Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop BigDog, an ultra rugged quadruped robot designed for the U.S. military. Google acquired the company in 2013 before offloading it four years later to SoftBank Group. During December 2020, Hyundai Motor Group bought an 80% stake in the company and promised to never weaponize any of its creations.
