This custom-built omnidirectional display can show an image that seemingly follows you, but it doesn’t use any head tracking technology. How so? Well, the ‘Andotrope’ device basically uses a smartphone and a black cylinder spinning at 1,800rpm.
The optical illusion is generated via a narrow slit in front of each display that creates a “scanning” view that appear a complete image to our brains, thanks to persistence of vision. A larger version with a higher frame rate can be built by simply mounting two tablets back-to-back. While there may not be very many practical uses for this device, we do see it being an interesting conversation starter at parties.
