Fans who still wander the dark streets of Tristram and the levels beneath it now have another way to return. DamnationX is a fan project built on top of DevilutionX, the long-running open-source port that already lets people run the original 1996 Diablo on modern computers with higher frame rates, controller support, and other practical fixes. Troygentic has taken that foundation and layered on optional high-definition art, lighting that uses ray tracing, and an online lobby so groups can play together.
High definition textures have arrived to replace those old sprites and floors for anyone looking to update, but only if you’re prepared to go through the hassle of configuring the local WebGPU, after which you’ll have the same appearance across both your browser and desktop builds. Ray-traced lighting has provided far more dynamic illumination throughout the dungeons and town than the old engine ever could, and it is a true game changer. Multiplayer now uses a dedicated server at lobby.damnationx.net, and if you happen to have Diablo II or Diablo II Resurrected sound packs laying around, you can swap them in for the full experience.

However, animations and some of the new graphics are still in their early stages, so don’t be shocked if some of the early opponent designs and effects appear unpolished. Desktop builds now only support Apple Silicon Macs, as they require macOS 26 or higher to function. Meanwhile, the browser version uses WebAssembly and can be hosted on either damnationx.net or a local server.

You’ll need to track down your own copy of the original game to play, followed by your legal copy of DIABDAT.MPQ, as the project does not include any original Blizzard components. We’ve also been working hard on the recent beta releases to improve frame rates and reduce stuttering, and we’ve finally been able to move some of the floor rendering and lighting computations to the GPU, which has made a significant difference with the high definition pack enabled.

We’ve already received reports that the new textures are making character models look a lot nicer, but some of the environments are still a little rough, and bugs are still a real possibility at this point, but DamnationX is still completely free from the GitHub releases page, with the caveat that it’s not affiliated with or endorsed by Blizzard in any way. If you’re one of the many people who still own a copy of the original Diablo and want to see how ray-traced lighting and better resolution art can improve the look of your old levels, we’ve got just the thing. Simply download the current build from Github and witness the change for yourself.
