Kara Zor-El hits the couch for what’s looking to be a serious heart to heart with her cousin Clark Kent as the opening scenes of the just released Supergirl trailer play out. Clark’s on her case because he’s worried she’s spending way too much time floating off on her own and might never really find a place to call home of her own. Kara shoots back that she’s got no one left to call her own and where she goes is wherever Krypto, her trusty sidekick, decides to go next.
Before you can absorb that, disaster strikes: Krem of the Yellow Hills and his crew arrive and zap Krypto with some kind of poison/disabling laser, leaving our superhero pup in a tight place, with only three days to live unless someone can find an antidote. Milly Alcock lends a real spark to the character of a 21-year-old Kara who has been drifting about the galaxy, attempting to escape the pain of Krypton’s entire extinction.

She celebrates her birthday by traveling to several planets with special red suns where she can drink without her abilities getting in the way, because, you know, who needs superpowers when they have a drink in one hand and a birthday cake in the other? When she learns that Krypto is in peril, she partners up with Ruthye Marye Knoll, a spunky little youngster whose father was a Krem victim, to take down the bad guy and save the dog, even if it means putting everything on hold.

Jason Momoa takes over as Lobo, and the teaser wastes no time showcasing what he brings to the screen. He rides the Spacehog, a giant space motorcycle, with a chain weapon swinging from one hand and a cigar in his lips. Skull ornaments adorn his clothing, and he carries himself like the galaxy’s fiercest bounty hunters. Kara meets him on her travels, and their conversation crackles with tension as she calls him out for his violent ways, while he appears pleased by her attitude.

Director Craig Gillespie has his finger on the pulse of this film, as each cut propels the story ahead at breakneck speed and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Eve Ridley lends a quiet fire to Ruthye’s character, and Matthias Schoenaerts absolutely controls the bad guy role of Krem, at least until Kara comes in and shows him who’s boss. Add in supporting parts from David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham, who play Kara’s parents in the flashbacks, and you can see why Kara is so motivated to battle. Supergirl will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
