DJI Osmo Mobile 8 Gimbal Leak
Your smartphone might be great at taking sharp footage under normal circumstances, but try taking a run through the park or a car ride over some rough roads and those built-in camera tools are going to start to struggle. That’s where the DJI Osmo Mobile 8 smartphone gimbal comes in – to sort out all that shaky footage.

DJI has improved the Osmo Mobile 8 by building on the foundation of the 7P and adding a few new features. In terms of size, the closed form measures 190 x 95 x 46mm and expands to 288 x 107 x 96mm. If you stretch it slightly, you get 215mm, and if you include the tripod base, you gain 67mm. Then there’s the battery life, which is supported by a 3,350mAh cell that will keep on running for 10 hours straight. It charges up relatively quickly via USB-C in about 2.4 hours or you can plug your phone straight into the gimbal and keep it powered up while you’re using it. One thing we like is that DJI says the battery life is exactly the same no matter which mode you’re using – from just plain old stabilisation to some of the more demanding panning – so you can get all the footage you need without having to go on a hunt for a power outlet.

One major leap forward is the new module that brings together subject tracking, on board audio collection and a fill light. This module is really something. Show it a friend who is pushing their way through a crowd and it locks onto them and adjusts as they move. The light adjusts to make sure it’s not too bright or too warm, and it will actually fill in those shadows during the golden hour or just as you’re having a conversation indoors without messing with the details. The audio side of things sounds really crisp and syncs up with the video right away so your cuts feel complete from the start. Plus DJI has added the ability to rotate 360 degrees horizontally so the gimbal can do a full circle without having to reset.

Another little touch is the addition of an NFC chip that lets you connect your phone in just a couple of seconds – just tap it and go – without having to mess around with apps. Then there’s the magnetic clamp on the fourth generation model which will hold phones up to 84.8mm wide and 8.4mm thick – so that’s everything from your compact phone to the latest Samsung or Google smartphone. The controls are pretty intuitive: you’ve got a side wheel for zooming, a slider for sensitivity and the app will do gesture recognition so you can start recording just by waving at it. And as for creative modes – timelapse for speeding up the sunset, hyperlapse to turn your walk into something epic – and panorama to stitch together some wide vistas without any distortion. And on top of that, you’ve got the option to do slow-mo at 1080p up to 120 frames per second, which should come in handy for replaying all sorts of fast action.

So the standard version will set you back 898 CNY, which is roughly $125 in China – and then there’s a Vlogger Combo for a bit more that includes the grip tripod. The good news is it’s available in China right now, and we’re expecting a global release in November – and who knows, maybe it’ll be released alongside the Neo 2 drone or the Mic 3 Pro for all you creators out there.
