MAWI United has just released an amazing Unreal Engine 5.3 ‘Dune Desert Landscape – Stone Pit’ tech demo just in time for the theatrical release of ‘Dune 2’. It makes use of the game engine’s Lumen and Nanite technologies to realistically simulate sand movement as well as the desert environment itself.
Some of the upgrades in Unreal Engine 5.3 include Nanite, which now boasts faster performance for masked materials, including foliage, and can represent a greater range of surfaces due to the new Explicit Tangents option. Lumen features Hardware Ray Tracing has expanded capabilities that include multiple reflection bounces, and delivers faster performance on consoles. While not confirmed, this tech demo may also make use of Virtual Shadow Maps (VSM)—which is now Production-Ready—Temporal Super Resolution (TSR), Path Tracing, and Substrate.
