Lone Wastelander sat down with Fallout 4 and refused to look at it as Bethesda intended. By placing the camera in a hard isometric position, disabling depth perception, and forcing the engine to show everything in full detail regardless of distance, the Commonwealth resembled something out of 1997. Locations that were previously sprawled out in first person are now displayed on the screen like finely built tabletop dioramas, with every rusted automobile, collapsed house, and wandering settler visible at once.

Covenant is the first location you see, with its tall walls and immaculate small buildings that appear nearly spotless from above. Then there’s the Corvega Assembly Plant, a massive plant sprawling across the frame, with its writhing pipelines and radioactive wasteland exposed for everyone to see. Then there’s the Starlight Drive-In, with an old movie screen looming over a few empty cars and some settlers walking around temporary shelters. On the other side of town, Mass Fusion’s skyscraper, with its shattered floors and dangling debris, resembles a single, enormous puzzle rather than a collection of distinct chambers. Meanwhile, the wreck of the FMS Northern Star rests on the coast like a large, beached metal whale, while the Castle’s wall makes a clean ring around the courtyard.

Then there’s Diamond City, which truly sticks out. From this vantage point, the ancient baseball stadium is converted into a bustling community, complete with market stalls, elevated walkways, and the once-imposing green wall, which is now just another boundary on the map. Vault 111’s entrance appears serene and inconspicuous in the hills, Sanctuary Hills stretches out with its pre-war houses still standing in clean, tidy rows, and the Red Rocket truck stop appears to be waiting for a tired traveler to rest. Atom Cats Garage and Concord, both packed into a tiny space, enabling you to quickly gain an understanding of the arrangement of buildings, highways, and hazards.

The technique is really straightforward because the Fallout 4 engine is still doing the hard lifting, but we’ve disabled the typical tactics to make things appear less stunning from a distance. As a result, each character and object retains their complete, comprehensive model. The result is a complex, almost hand-crafted design that evokes memories of the original Fallout and Fallout 2, as well as games that continue to strive to replicate that old atmosphere. Everything sits flat against the screen, just like in older games, enabling you to study the map, plot your course, and hunt for cover as you would on paper.
