James Bruton Better Doc Ock Doctor Octopus Tentacle
Spider-Man isn’t a fan of Doctor Octopus’ tentacles, especially in the ‘Spider-Man 2’ film, but inventor James Bruton most certainly is. He wanted to see if it was possible to build a better Doc Ock tentacle using joints made from Stewart platforms, or a type of parallel manipulator with six prismatic actuators.

The six actuators in this Stewart platform lets it move or tilt in any direction while handling a lot of weight. In the comics, each of Doc Ock’s tentacles are capable of lifting around 8-tons and move at the speed of ninety foot per second, striking with the force of a jackhammer. Bruton’s improved tentacle uses three Stewart platforms and measures around 3-feet long, with nearly all of the parts being 3D-printed. Each of these platforms uses six servo motors, so a total of 18 servos were needed, all controlled by an Arduino Mega 2560 board.
