Elongated body panels extend from a sharp pointed nose all the way to the two huge bat wing fins protruding from each side of the cockpit. A jet engine rests in the back, its lid angled just like the prop from the movie. When you open the canopy, you’ll see a highly realistic single seat inside, complete with precisely replicated control surfaces and instrument panels. The exterior is a sea of black and dark gray bricks, punctuated only by a few modest flashes of red and silver that truly bring the film’s industrial look to life.

To start the primary mechanical sequence, push one button. The side panels swing out to the side utilizing these clever little lift arm systems, dividing the outer shell into three independent sections in a relatively smooth motion. Inside, you will find the smaller, more streamlined Batmissile, which Batman uses as an emergency escape in the film. The panels can swing right back into place, and the model can be displayed with the shell in its original form or with the Batmissile popped out, giving you the option of seeing the full Batmobile or its transformed state, as everything works together seamlessly and can be switched back and forth without issue.

There are six tiny Easter eggs concealed in the model, all of which are related to the film. One of them is the tracking device that the Penguin attaches to the vehicle during the final chase scene. Others are simply little details, either printed on small tiles or artfully placed in just the perfect place to keep you guessing until you take a closer look. As an added bonus, LEGO has created not one, not two, but three entirely new elements for this set: a completely new Batman cowl that drapes nicely across the shoulders and chest, a specially molded cape that cannot be picked up with the standard LEGO fabric cape, and a few extra bits for the body and the Batmissile.

The box includes only one minifigure, but it’s a spectacular one: the Michael Keaton Batman with white eyes and the new cowl. He comes with a cape that is molded as a single hard piece rather than the typical fabric-style version. When he isn’t flying around the city in his Batmobile, he can be displayed on a nice little stand with the Batman Returns emblem on it.

This model complements the earlier 1989 Batmobile and Batwing kits, giving collectors a lovely little trio of sets based on the Burton flicks. It is somewhat smaller than the 1989 Batmobile, but this is more than compensated for by the new transformation feature and all of the exquisite little touches that bring the film to life. The whole thing appears much more like a model you’d proudly display on a shelf, which is consistent with its 18+ age rating.

When the early-access window begins, you may place an order on LEGO.com or in a LEGO Store, and anyone who saw the original 1992 film will be overjoyed. You may see a definitive recreation of one of cinema’s most iconic automobiles, complete with the exact and dramatic escape sequence, there in front of you.
