Making your own animatronics has become easier, thanks to 3D printing, but building a robotic-life-sized version of Springtrap from Five Nights at Freddy’s still requires immense knowledge and skill. In the game, Springtrap is basically a heavily damaged rabbit animatronic with a great portion of his right ear missing with wires sticking out of the stump left behind.
It uses a simple mechanism that resembles a bicycle’s crankset to walk, as in when it rotates, a leg lifts up and moves forward, then back down, thanks to an ODrive S1 motor. A Teensy 4.1 development board controls the motor’s driver, while a gear reduction increases its torque. To balance things out, Dynamixel servos were used to actuate the arms that double as counterweights. As for the skin, that is all handcrafted EVA foam.

The jerky walk-cycle really lends to the horror. Bravo, sir. Suggestion: add noise to the smoothing, for the facial features. I feel like that’d really sell it,” said one commenter.
