A team of eight engineers from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich have developed Magnecko, a legged robot capable of scaling walls and ceilings, similar to Spider-Man. This is made possibly by using electro-permanent magnet modules, each consisting of smaller magnets that can magnetize and demagnetize within seconds.
The current prototype requires a human operator and a handheld controller, but once set in motion, Magnecko can autonomously follow the set route. This includes transitioning between walking on flat surfaces and climbing vertical ferromagnetic surfaces. Future upgrades include autonomous obstacle avoidance and smart route planning. Unfortunately (or fortunately), it doesn’t have any web slinging powers.

Our aim is to develop a highly versatile motion platform for climbing applications in industrial environments. With the capability of using various sensors or attachments, precise measurements can be made directly while climbing or while staying stationary over long periods of time,” said the team.
