F-35 Lightning II Gatling Gun

The General Dynamics GAU-22/U Equalizer is a four-barrel 25 mm Gatling-type rotary cannon, designed specifically for use on Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Lightning II. The CTOL version of the aircraft will carry the gun internally, while the STOVL and CV versions use it as an external podded gun. The GAU-22/A’s major difference is the use of four barrels, rather than the five barrels on the GAU-12/U. The GAU-22/A is lighter, has a reduced rate of fire of 3,300 rounds per minute and an improved accuracy of 1.4 milliradians as compared to the GAU-12. This system is undergoing intensive testing and qualification. The weapon is currently produced by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems. Power Paper

Swedish researchers have developed “power paper,” a plastic-like paper made completely from organic materials that has an exceptional ability to conduct ions and electrons. Just a small 6-inch piece – approximately 1/10 of an inch thick – can store 1F (farad), recharge in seconds, and be charged hundreds of times. Unlike other supercapacitors / batteries now in use, this material is made from renewable cellulose and a readily available polymer. Continue reading for another picture and more information.

The Zumwalt-class destroyers are a class of US Navy guided missile destroyers designed as multi-mission stealth ships with a focus on land attack. These destroyers have a low radar profile; an integrated power system, which can send electricity to the electric drive motors or weapons, which may someday include a railgun or free-electron lasers; total ship computing environment infrastructure, serving as the ship’s primary LAN and as the hardware-independent platform for all of the ship’s software ensembles, automated fire-fighting systems and automated piping rupture isolation. The lead ship is named Zumwalt for Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, and carries the hull number DDG-1000. This 600-foot-long destroyer traversed the Kennebec River to the Atlantic on its first voyage. Portable N64

Code named Project Reality, the console’s design was mostly finalized by mid-1995, though Nintendo 64’s launch was delayed until 1996. As part of the fifth generation of gaming, the system competed primarily with the PlayStation and the Sega Saturn. The Nintendo 64 was launched with Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. Unfortunately, Nintendo never got around to making a portable version, despite the console’s popularity. Fortunately, many gamers have created their own versions, like the example you see above. Fender Cardboard Guitar

Ernest Packaging / Signal Snowboards partnered with Stratocaster to create a fully-playable guitar made from cardboard, and it’s so good that Fender gave it a Certificate of Authenticity. “One of the biggest challenges of this neck is with the strings. It has about 250 lbs of torque on the neck,” said Dave Lee, co-founder of Signal Snowboard. Mike Martinez of Ernest Packaging spent countless hours designing a solid cardboard core to match the capabilities of a standard Stratocaster. Click here to view more cool custom guitars. Wood Burner Cars

Eugene Chernigov, a 36-year-old from Ukraine, transformed his old Opel into a wood-burning machine, since rising gas prices made driving to work every day an expensive affair. By day he’s a physics / mathematics teacher, but after stumbling upon an article online about using wood as fuel, he spent 2-months researching the topic, before taking the plunge and installing a wood-burning stove, along with a metal canister to the back of his car. The vehicle consumes approximately 40-pounds of firewood per 100 kilometers, and has a top speed of 60mph, plenty for icy roads. Continue reading for another man who created a wood-burning car.
