Capcom’s Resident Evil series has been the survival horror king for ages, with its creepy hallways and zombie-infested mansions keeping us on edge. Now it’s diving into new waters with Resident Evil Survival Unit, a mobile strategy game coming later in 2025. Developed by Aniplex and JOYCITY with Capcom at the helm, this isn’t a rehash of the console classics—it’s a brand new spin that combines real-time strategy with that Resident Evil feel.
You start by waking up in a hospital, a test subject for the shady Umbrella Corporation. From there you’re thrown into a world that’s both familiar and strange, a parallel timeline where fan-faves like Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine show up with new roles. “Set in an alternate universe, the game spins a new story that honors Resident Evil’s roots while blazing its own trail,” Capcom says, promising a story that feels at home yet totally new.

Gameplay is all about strategy, you build squads with series legends, each with their own skills. Leon brings sharpshooter precision, Jill survival instincts. These heroes don’t just fight they mess with the environment, adding layers to fights against classic Resident Evil monsters and a new creepy beast, Mortem, designed by iconic artist Yoshitaka Amano.
Capcom calls it a mix of “real-time choices and heart-pounding survival” which means juggling resources, setting up defenses and making snap decisions when things get hairy. Early clips show characters slinging gatling guns and throwing up barriers—a big departure from the series slow and spooky vibe but perfect for mobile’s fast paced action.
Your base is a customizable mansion, a lively hub where you can haggle with the iconic Weapons Merchant, plan your next move or dig into character backstories through chats. “The mansion’s a storytelling hotspot, where you can dive into your crew’s lives in this alternate world,” JOYCITY says, hinting at narrative depth you don’t often see in mobile games.
It’s not just a headquarters it’s a living space where every upgrade and convo shapes your game plan. Plus global multiplayer lets you team up with friends worldwide, making survival a team effort across Japan, North America and Europe.
It’s free to play with in-app purchases which raises some concerns about pay-to-win especially with character ranks like Legendary and Epic hinting at a gacha system. Capcom’s mobile track record isn’t perfect—Resident Evil 3 on iOS has only sold 115,000 copies since March 2025—but they’re going all in here.
“Switching up the genre will bring in new faces,” says Capcom’s Kawata, hoping the strategy angle will attract players who might not play traditional horror. Coming before Resident Evil Requiem in February 2026, Survival Unit could be the spark that ignites Capcom’s bigger plans.
