Rolls-Royce Ship

Rolls-Royce has unveiled a new type of autonomous ship that will be used to transport cargo around the world. These unmanned vessels are controlled from a central holodeck, and could hit seas by 2020. Yes, it does come equipped with a central holodeck bridge, called the “Future Operator Experience Concept”. The smart workstations automatically recognize crew members when they walk into the bridge, while the windows of the bridge double as augmented reality displays. “We are entering a truly exciting period in the history of shipping, where technology, and in particular the smart use of Big Data is going to drive the next generation of ships. Over the next ten to 20 years we believe Ship Intelligence is going to be the driving force that will determine the future of our industry, the type of ships at sea, and the competence levels required from tomorrow’s seafarers,” said Mikael Makinen, Rolls-Royce President.
