Fresh Grocer has just upgraded all their 180 shopping carts with wireless electronic brakes which are part of its “Cart Anti-theft Protection System”. This system – developed by Carttronics – is installed on one front wheel of any shopping cart and locks up when rolled over a special underground antenna. Many of the carts, up to 30 per month, were likely stolen by college students from nearby Penn State. A few were even found in dormitory hallways after spring move-out.

“Shopping cart security is a growing trend among supermarkets nationwide. According to a 2001 USA Today article, a cart is stolen from a store every 90 seconds in the United States.”
