Toshiba Hologram Self-Checkout 7-Eleven Japan
H/t: Gizmodo
Select 7-Eleven convenience stores in Japan aim to take contactless shopping to the next level with self-checkout registers that feature holographic touchscreens. Six stores in Tokyo will participate in a pilot program starting next month, in which guests will be able to use a register that comes equipped with a display embedded directly int the checkout counter. This display projects an image of a touchscreen that can be tapped.

The demand to contactless shopping has surged these past 2-years, and this self-checkout stand takes up 30% less space than standard registers, enabling stores to place more product around them. These holographic stands only accept cashless payment methods, including credit cards, electronic money cards, and QR codes. Unfortunately (or fortunately), alcohol or tobacco cannot be purchased at these self-checkout stands, as they require a human employee to approve of the sale.
