
This incredible Xenogears remake in Unreal Engine 5 by Vitor Maccari updates the 1998 RPG and gives it a 2.5D makeover. In addition to the game engine, the 3D artist also used Maya, Zbrush, Houdini, Substance Painter, Megascan Textures, and SpeedTree to create this demo.
The idea came to him after watching some Star Ocean: The Second Story R gameplay. Xenogears for the PlayStation basically combines traditional role-playing elements, like Square’s signature Active Time Battle system, with new features particular to the game’s martial arts combat style. There are two slightly different battle systems, with the first one having the player control human characters in turn-based combat manipulated through the sequencing of learned combos. A second system makes use of “gears”, introducing different sets of statistics and abilities for each character.
