Best Custom Portable Gaming Systems

If you've ever wished for portable versions of your favorite consoles - wish no more, our editors have searched the internet for the best custom portable systems and compiled a list for your enjoyment.

Dreamcast

Dave took on an ambitous project when he created this portable Dreamcast from scratch. It features a custom designed case, 5" LCD display, and a built-in 16MB memory card. Powered by two rechargeable batteries, its good for up to 1 1/2 hours of playtime.

Sega CDX

Most of you may not remember the CDX, it combined the Sega Genesis and Sega CD into one console. SegaSonicFan's portable CDX sports a 5" display, JP/US import switch, second headphone jack, S-Video output, external controller switch, and a built-in automatic scan FM radio. It even plays 32X games.

Gamecube

Gamelver didn't provide instructions on how he constructed this thing nor technical specs but from the images you can tell he did a pretty good job.

N64

Another Ben Heck creation, this portable N64 measures in at a hefty 9" x 5.5" x 2.5" and utilizes a PSOne screen.

SNES

SNESGuy used a Model 1 (1992) SNES to construct his portable system. The "SNESp Mark II" includes a PSOne display, two player capability, battery meter, headphone jack, stereo speakers, external A/V input, and a custom vacuum formed case.

NES

Ben Heck's NES Micro is one of the most compact custom systems we've seen. He managed to pack a 2.5-inch LCD, NES circuit board, volume control, and headphone jack into a case that's "not much wider than a NES cartridge".

Atari Jaguar

The Jaguar was the world's first gaming system with two 32-bit processors. Unfortunately, the system met its demise in early 1996 due to poor sales. Well Dave decided to pay tribute with this portable Jaguar.

Atari 2600

Even though it's the only one on this list that doesn't have a built-in display, the laser-engraved wood case got us.

Playstation 2

We couldn't find any additional info on this because the original page (here) detailing the system was taken down. Ben's goal was to "have it done before the real PSP was released". Did we miss any? If so, just leave us a comment. Digg it.

They look so great. We need some scale though. Something to show how big they would look when held. The Dreamcast is the best. With it's back log of games i'm surprised Sega didn't make it a hand held

My favorite on that list would be the Dreamcast, it had the best games

Jaguar was the first 64-bit. (not totally)

most of these are quite pointless and lame, due to there rediculous sizes. altho i like to see that people are creating portable consoles such as n64, ps2, and g-cube. But all of the other consoles mentioned here can be emulated by the psp. And then they are actually portable rather than just batterie operated. anyone who like nes, snes, or any of the titles available on umd (and does not have problems pirating software). Buy yourself a psp + a big memory card and type "psp" in to torrentspy :)
19
OMG can you buy any of these?! I want one of those NES customs, the one with Megaman on the screen looks awesome.
20
Too big?! man, let's see a PSP emulate an N64/DC/GC. And lets not forget that the games on these systems are a heck of a lot better than whats on PSP, eh. You completely miss the point man. It's just FUN to make a game system portable. It's not like they're being sold to the mass market or anything. The best, in my opinion, of the above portables would have to the DCp. Awesome workmanship. And the first DCp ever! I might as well show my portables while I'm at it. And lastly, the super-easy-to-make There are others, but these are my golden ones.

The Dreamcast Portable is my favorite, you can't beat playing Sonic Adventures on the go
22
Sega had the best systems and games

To whoever said something along the lines of "why not buy a PSP and emulate the games?": don't you know downloading and playing commercial game ROMs is ILLEGAL? At least in the united states it's classified as piracy, a criminal offense. These systems can actually be difficult to build, btu they're quite rewarding. Build a PS2p or a GCNp and make your friend's DS look like PONG! >:D
24
Lets think here... psp 250$ snesp (if you make an uber cheap one) 50$, and I mean UBER cheap like G-force! No offence ment..
