Flat Screen TV from 1958

According to this old Popular Mechanics article, flat screen televisions have been around since 1958 -- or at least the technology. Designed mainly for military use, it just never caught on due to patents/licensing issues. Click the image for full article.
From the article: "The picture tube, only 2-5/8 inches thick, is made of two rectangular pieces of plate glass with about an inch of space between them. The edges are sealed with powdered-glass solder to hold the vacuum. The surface of the thin tube is the equivalent of a 21-inch conventional screen."

Mmmmm...flat screen television from 1958. Just imagine if this technology had actually been released commercially in 1958, we'd probably have holographic televisions by now.

it may be flat screen but the base is thick as hell!!! -kyu

Makes you think about the tecnology we maybe already have but not comercially released... Maybe our kids will come to us and say "Dad! Did you know that the holographic TV was invented in 1999??"
17
that screen is nothing else than a different construction of a normal crt screen with the electron beam in its bottom station... tft and plasma screens are a totally different technique
18
Its actually a GOOD thing that the technique is different. The more techniques out there, the more we can build off of. Maybe LCD will NEVER lead to holographics, maybe Plasma will, if one is adopted and the other ABANDONED, we will never know...

Is it that hard to make a flat screen? I thought the ovalish screen was so you can sit around the TV and still see pretty clearly, except for the stuff on the other side =P. Just wondering, what would happen if they just made a normal TV with a flat screen? I don't know much aboot TV's...I'm more of a computer person rather than an electronics person.

I bet it wasn't in color and it cost $10 trillion

Actually, the military flight technology that has not been released for public viewing probably really is mind-blowing.
22
FAKE
23
it has a tube...thats not exactly amazing technology, having that come out then would not blast technology into the realm of holograms...that makes no sense
