One of our readers just sent in an interesting clip that shows you how to make plasma using a microwave, cork, and a match. What are your thoughts? Video after the jump.
Plasma typically takes the form of neutral gas-like clouds or charged ion beams, but may also include dust and grains (called dusty plasmas). They are typically formed by heating and ionizing a gas, stripping electrons away from atoms, thereby enabling the positive and negative charges to move freely

Very cool to see, though I'm not going to attempt this myself :)
2
What was the point in doing that?
3
That was cool seeing the plasma moving around there. I will take their advice and not do this my self though :)

Yes, this experiment actually works, I've tried it before, in the lab that is...
7
Once, my brother put a baked potato in the microwave, but he wrapped in in foil.
8

9
I think the original point of this experiment was to confirm ball lightning.
10
Wow, how incredibly exciting. Hi I have a lot of time on my hands, look at me. I feel stupid for just looking at this.

for more microwave fun, checkout the wonton way at http://www.wontonway.com/microwave/microwave.html
16
That was pretty cool, tho i must admit it looks very dangerous, the fuel canister on the side of the microwave wasnt helping that out either....
17
Easiest microwave experiment - get a grape, cut it partially in half, leaving the two halves joined by a bit of skin. Put in microwave. The glucose will vaporise. Nice jets of flame.
18
I did this once, but with gas. If you use the same setup, but gas into the glass bottle , it will have the same effect. No matches necassary!
19
NO2? Isn't that the laughing gas you get at the dentist office?
20
wonder what would happen if they left it going longer than 20 seconds...?
21
Gas? Tell me you didn't put gasoline in your microwave...

Seth, the gas at the dentist's office is NO. NO2 is much more dangerous.

how can i tweak the directions in order to get a 60" plasma and how will the microwave distinguish samsung from LG? Also this won't work well since i need to get a microwave big enough to accomodate the full gestation period of the 60" incher.
