Picoflyer - World's Smallest RC Helicopter

With only a 60 mm rotor diameter, the Picoflyer is the world's smallest RC helicopter. It's roughly the size of a 9V battery, weighs 3.3g, and has a flight time of up to 1 minute. Video clip after the jump.
From the article: "It is operated via an 900 MHz radio link, however, due to its small size and no aid from electronic sensors it is rather difficult to control precisely in the air."

Key benefits of the helicopter: * Absolutely stable without the use of any gyros or autopilots * There are no servos, actuators, rods, links, gears or other moving part * The whole helicopter is operated and controlled by 3 electric motors * Forward flight is achieved by tilting the helicopter with the tail propeller * The rotor blades are encircled by a ring that supports and protects them * It is very efficient, all the power is used to generate lift * It is silent, the mechanical drives and the rotors generate very little noise * There are no vibrations * It is safe

As with most innovation, the problem is the battery. What good is 30 seconds of flying? I think the most challenging issue of technology now and in future is how to increase storage and generation of energy

i read an article on this, the guy who built it is an engineer for nassa, and builds indoor helicoptors for a hobby, this little thing is a world record

ok its cool...but what good is a remote control helicopter that just flies straight up and then back down to land?...watch the video again there is no forawrd or reverse or any control of such sort

No forward or reverse? Yaw control by varying power to one/both of the top rotors. Pitch control by tail rotor. What it dosn't have is roll, but forward and back it does. And that is enough to navigate. Perhaps the pilot didn't want to be videoed crashing it? :)

I think this is cool. I'd buy one. But what if you were flying one outside and a strong wind came up... GOODBYE HELICOPTER!

you have all missed the point...too short a fly time, no roll, where can it go? WHO CARES... It was a challenge to see if it could be done. This man and others like him will be the ones to carry us into new challenges...alternative energy etc..I'm thankful there are minds out there that still work....

i think a lot of people are missing the point. this is a PROTOTYPE. in twelve to fifteen years they'll have the mininanopod flyer which will be the size of a mosquito's asscrack and will hold up to 15 hours of mp5's and your chromagnum le brea tarpit progeny will glance up from their pspxp2 just long enough,ironically, to say,"what a useless piece of crap." this little guy is very impressive and should not be dismissed so easily. if i could build one, i would, but i can't. and unless you can, you should respect and admire how far some of us have come in mastering certain phenomena and utilizing it as technological know-how. i suppose boolean logic was just a bunch of 1's and 0's until the Matrix came along and made it sheik, but the actual applications are boundless, and i, for one, am humbled by it.
