Zerosign managed to take his old Nintendo Powerglove and turn it into a fully functioning computer mouse after countless hours of wiring and hacking. More pictures after the jump...
Man that must have taken forever. I want one, but only if it was made with a correctly mapped microchip and not hardware like that.

Zerosign, you have some serious talent.

I recently did something similar for an embedded system design class. We were going for being able to move your hand around like this (using accelerometers to detect motion), but ANY tilting of your hand screwed that up (due to gravity), so we reverted to 'tilting'. It helped if you imagined you were holding an invisible joystick.

I recently did something similar in an embedded design class, but we used all our own parts instead of hijacking an existing system. We tried doing it with accelerometers instead of gyroscopes. Unfortunately, this limited us to tilting your hand instead of moving it around since ANY tilt of your hand (gravity) would far outscale the acceleration from moving your hand around. Still pretty darn cool, and a bit tidier :)
Future plans include converting it to wireless, and making another attempt at the "motion" mode.

Not a bad looking mouse, other than the wires hanging out, I'd sport it

Yeah, my friend actually built one in 1992 using a powerglove, 6 pounds of duct tape, and a slice of ham. Oh, and thanks for the update, if you didn't catch the sarcasm, V.

But seriously, kudos for building it - though I dare say that I think a simple tablet PC interface might trump this type of device - until a 3D (or virtual 3D, like first-person-shooter 3D) desktop gets created.
