(Video) LG KE850 vs. Apple iPhone Similarities

Engadget takes a look at some of the similarities between LG's KE850 and the Apple iPhone. What are your thoughts? Video slideshow after the jump.
Two sparsely-buttoned large, touchscreen phones: the Apple iPhone, and the LG KE850 (which already won the International Forum Design Product Design Award for 2007). Separated at birth, or possible lawsuit number two for Apple? You decide

Oh this is just the beginning. Its going to be like the Nano all over again. If you can't beat em', join em'.

Sure, they look similar, but I would say LG's GUI looks very Macish rather than the other way around. Apple and LG have both worked on their products for years (probably) - if someone copied the other, who knows who.

what are my thoughts? i think it's ridiculous to say that these cellphones were 'separated at birth'. They both have touchscreens, and that's it. The rest is similar because there's no other way of putting dial buttons on a phone like that than to put them on a screen! Does that mean, that it's copying the design? NO. What about the flipping screen? Well, the screen is panoramic, so why not make use of it and flip the screen when you hold your cellphone horizontally? Is that copying? NO. It's an obvious extension of the characteristics of a phone, so why anybody should have the monopoly to sell that kind of technology? Oh yeah, it's the money...Anyway, this is just stupid to me, they can sue the crap out of each other for having similarities, which we will see - take my word for it - in the future. Come to think of it, why not sue every cellphone producing company for sharing same designs? I mean...most cellphones got 'hang up' and 'call' buttons on top left and right (or right and left) of the dials. Were all these cellphones separated at birth too?

I don't think there will be a problem, Apples new iPhone will revolutionise the layout for the phone. All new phones will end up looking akin to the iPhone.

whats the price of that LG?
6
Not really, LG was "out" first, and how many ways can you really change the interface? Society has become way to picky and expects too much.
7
maybe LG ripped off Apple, or maybe its just great minds think alike, but no we can never have that, some one has to be copping some one and someone to be suing some one elce.

in my humble opinion, no, not at all, they do look quite similar but there was nothing more they could really have done with that sort of design. By that sort of design I mean a phone thats just a big fat touch screen. Please could somebody tell me what song that was it's a bit nice :)

it just shows that apple is good at making a fuss about their product, but it is not as innovative as people think, just following the trend and putting more $ into it, like the ipod that came after the rio and the creative player or the first mac that was stolen from commodore it wasn't first and may or may not be better- they just make a bigger noise and tell everyone that they are the best and the most original and people buy into it because they don't look any further than the hype

Nate said "If you can’t beat em’, join em’. " Isn't that Apple's philosophy? Take existing technology, sex up the design and tell everyone about how you invented it and are going to "revolutionise" x, y and z? Jobs said "there's nothing like it...we're years ahead". Er, months behind, actually Steve. By the way, the only difference between the Sony W950i and the iPhone is that the former has a keyboard AND touchscreen. So the only major point from Apple is no physical keyboard at all....which LG beat them to. I've had a music/video/internet phone with no keyboard for months. My Sony P910i with removable keypad.

Well Well Well, I guess apple wasn't 5 years ahead of the competition at all, but probably more like 18 months. The multiple touch screen, the way that an entire webpage renders, phone orientation recognition, full screen video and possibly random access voice mail are some nice features that are beyond what LG could do. There is no doubt that seeing the form factor of the iphone seemed like it was on to what the customer wants. And it seemed like it was way ahead of the competition, but obviously not. If I were microsoft, I would be working with LG to get this item ready for prime time as an iPhone killer. Its all about promotion.

Oh and the initial price of the LG850 ... was set at 600 Euros. With some real competition now maybe both this and the iPhone will come down in price.

all i know is most American Company steal idea's from over oceans (like Japan) and try to make a clone from it. lawsuits are file and million dollar fines are paid. but, the courts still premit the product to be sold. NEC bottomless cell phone is only 2 mm thick and weight is only a few OZ.

i think steve jobs is holding both phone in the youtube vid.... i did see the resemblance
