Since 1957, the Fiat 500 has been roaming city streets in Europe with its tiny size. Now, the Italian carmaker is bringing back a gas-powered version equipped with a mild-hybrid engine paired with a six-speed manual transmission. Set to launch in November 2025 from Turin’s historic Mirafiori plant, the Fiat 500 Hybrid will be priced from just €17,000 (about $20,000).
Fiat’s betting on the 500 Hybrid to counter the slow demand for fully electric cars in Europe, where the 500e, launched in 2020, hasn’t quite hit sales goals. It features a 1.0-liter three-cylinder FireFly mild-hybrid engine, paired with a 12-volt lithium battery, generating 69 horsepower and 68 lb-ft of torque.

Fiat’s ramping up production with a goal of rolling out 5,000 units by the end of 2025, and the ultimate goal being to pump out 100,000 a year at their iconic Mirafiori plant. Olivier François calls Mirafiori “Fiat’s heart and soul, where the 500’s story kicked off back in 1957 with Dante Giacosa.”

In a sea of automatic transmissions, the 500 Hybrid’s six-speed manual gearbox is a rare gem, while its mild-hybrid system, with that 12-volt battery, gives a sweet boost to fuel efficiency and keeps emissions low.

Aesthetically, the 500 Hybrid stays true to its roots, sporting a small front grille and a hidden exhaust. Available in three variants—Hatchback, 3+1 with a rear-hinged door for easy back-seat access, and the breezy Cabrio—it’s got something for everyone. “The new Fiat 500 Hybrid is the next chapter for an icon,” François says.

Inside, the 500 Hybrid brings the goods with a 7.0-inch digital dashboard and a 10.25-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen that hooks up to wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s a breeze to stream tunes or navigate tight city streets. With bold colors and carefully picked materials, the interior aims to “recapture the magic that makes the 500 not just a car, but a way of life,” as Stellantis puts it.
