2027 Range Rover Electric Reveal
Range Rover Electric finally arrived this week after a delayed decade of work, and order books are open now for the 2027 model. JLR kept the fifth-generation silhouette almost intact, then fitted an aero grille, cleaner wheels, and a smoothed underbody so the big SUV still looks like a Range Rover from across a parking lot. Solihull builds it next to the petrol and plug-in versions, while Wolverhampton makes the battery packs and drive units. Martin Limpert, Range Rover’s managing director, called electric propulsion a natural match for the cabin’s calm, and he also said the company pushed testing further than first planned so the car would still feel like the original luxury SUV.

Two identical permanent magnet motors, each generating 260 kW, deliver a whopping 542 horsepower and 627 pound feet of torque to all four wheels. Officially, it’ll go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and from 50 to 75 mph in 2.7 seconds. We’re talking about a battery pack of 118.5 Kwh in a double-stacked pack of 344 prismatic cells, powered by an 800 volt system. They claim it can travel 372 miles on the WLTP cycle and 333 miles on the EPA cycle, which is exactly what they tell potential customers in real life. It weighs 6,360 pounds at rest, which is only 165 pounds more than the original V8 (once the differentials and shafts are removed), and its center of gravity has fallen 88 millimeters. Air suspension still raises and lowers the machine, with a default ride height 15 millimeters lower than the previous combustion car, and don’t worry, the water depth remains 35 inches.

Fast charging works equally as well, if not better. Fill that battery pack from 10 to 80% in 22 minutes with a 350 kW DC connection, and you’ll receive approximately 137 WLTP miles of driving. Alternatively, put 137 miles back into it in just 10 minutes. North American versions include a specific NACS connection that can connect to Tesla Superchargers, with plug and charge on top, allowing you to simply plug it in and go. If you charge at home, the pack will be full in roughly 7 hours with a 22 kW wallbox and 19 hours with a 7 kW unit. Their innovative ThermAssist system harnesses leftover heat to reheat the cabin on chilly days, using 40% less energy and providing an extra 25 miles of driving range in extreme conditions. The battery pack and motor system come with an 8-year or 100,000-mile guarantee (whichever comes first). The Vehicle-to-load system allows you to feed 3.6 kW to a power tool or a campsite, with Vehicle-to-grid alternatives planned for the future.

Even though most owners would never leave the pavement, off-road capability is nevertheless included into the design. According to JLR, Integrated Traction Management can shut down motor speed in 50 milliseconds, which is 100 times faster than the previous combustion setup, and Intelligent Driveline Dynamics can send rear torque from a hard right-angle turn to a complete stop almost instantly to prevent a wheel spinning out of control. Single Pedal mode can handle a 33-degree slope or a 45-degree incline while just rolling along, and towing capacity lowers from 7,716 pounds on conventional gas versions to a more manageable 5,512 pounds, a significant reduction for somebody who often hauls hefty trailers around.

JLR believes that anonymized data from customers who actually use their vehicles demonstrates that 97% of journeys can be completed at the new towing limit. Testers put the device through a rather demanding testing program, comparable to 38 circuits around the world, over 1.5 million kilometers on the road, and a staggering 250,000 simulated hours at temperatures as low as -40C in the frozen part of Sweden and as scorching as the desert sun. Under the skin, there are over 300 patents covering everything from the motors to the thermal management system, the most JLR has ever put into a single vehicle.

The cabin layout is remarkably similar to the outgoing Range Rover, with a large screen in the center of the dashboard, steering wheel buttons, and a heated wheel to protect your hands from turning into ice. You can also use the phone app to control things like the air purifier and lock status, as well as see how much energy you have left and how far you can go. The First Edition automobiles are available in three special colors: Belgravia Green, Santorini Black, and Varesine Blue, with the option of adding some fancy Light Cloud Ultrafabrics and Kvadrat cloth for good measure.

The SE, HSE, Autobiography, SV, SV Ultra, and SV Black versions complete the pricing ladder, available in normal or extended wheelbase. Prices in the United States start at a whopping $138,000 before destination taxes, or $140,550 delivered for a SE. Approximately $25,800 more than the normal gas vehicle and $9,200 more than the plug-in hybrid, the P550e. UK prices start at £154,070, and the SV Black long-wheelbase model costs £225,000 or more. Ultra variants are available, but a quote is required to determine the price. Don’t worry, bespoke paint and trim are still available if you truly want to make your car stand out from the crowd and normal colors won’t suffice.
