China Artificial Sun EAST World Record
China’s artificial sun has set yet another new world record on Thursday sustaining a high plasma temperature for 1,056 seconds. To date, this is the longest duration for an experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) fusion energy reactor. Back in May, the artificial sun managed to sustain a temperature of 120 million degrees Celsius for 101-seconds.

How does EAST work? This artificial sun is designed to mimic a fusion reaction like the Sun using both hydrogen and deuterium gases as fuel. Researchers hope that it will provide insights into plasma physics research that is crucial to establish industrial-sized reactors to generate clean energy. So far, EAST has successfully reached three performance targets separately – 1-million-ampere current, 100-million-degree-Celsius temperature and 1,000-second duration – and the ultimate test is to have the reactor achieve all the targets in a single attempt.
