The Apple Watch SOS feature may rarely be used by most users, but it did happen to save one woman’s life after she fell into the Columbia River. How does this feature work? Emergency SOS basically uses your Apple Watch to automatically call local emergency services and then shares your location with them. She managed to get her foot stuck under a rock in the freezing river and approached exhaustion before the rescue operation.
An emergency call was made within 30-minutes of falling into the river, which has an average temperature 13º C, and despite extreme exhaustion as well as light hypothermia, she was rescued without any serious injuries. The Emergency SOS feature can be activated by pressing and holding your Apple Watch’s side button (the button below the Digital Crown) until a special slider appears. Then you simply drag the Emergency SOS slider to start the call, or you can keep holding the side button until a countdown appears, after which your watch calls emergency services automatically. When paired with WristCam, you’ll also be able to take footage of the incident.
