NASA’s Orion spacecraft successfully completed its Moon flyby and captured a selfie, along with these fascinating up-close shots of the lunar surface. It’s currently drifting further away from the Moon and preparing to enter a distant retrograde orbit starting tomorrow (Nov. 25).
Orion’s final orbit will be approximately 92,000 kilometers (57,166 miles) from the Moon’s surface, enabling the spacecraft to conserve fuel. After entering lunar orbit, it will then break the record for the largest distance traveled from Earth by a spacecraft designed for humans, which was previously set by Apollo 13 at 400,000 kilometers (248,548 miles) in 1970.
