While not as strange as this orange pinhole camera, a photographer who goes by ‘Elecoolbeenz’ online did manage to 3D print a functional film camera without using any existing parts. Put simply, the shutter is a two-way magnetically locking rotary sector shutter with a speed of around 1/100s, while the rest of the parts (lens element, magnets, leatherette, epoxy, and screws) only cost around $25 total.
The single-element meniscus lens was purchased from an optical surplus reseller, and as far as ‘Elecoolbeenz’ knows, this part is not from a camera. There have been some experiments with people making 3D printed lenses, but the quality just isn’t there yet for photography, so this was a concession its creator had to make. There’s no word yet on if the files will be released for makers to create their own camera.
