NASA’s Perseverance rover recently captured a couple of rocks that look like a fossilized shark fin and crab claw. It used its Right Mastcam-Z camera, which can take color photos / video and three-dimensional stereo images, on Aug. 18, 2023 (Sol 886) at the local mean solar time of 12:25:43.

Mastcam-Z actually consists of two identical camera systems mounted on the mast that stands up from the rover deck. They are placed next to each other and point in the same direction, providing a 3D view similar to what human eyes would see, just sharper. Plus, a zoom function lets the rover team see details of faraway targets like never before.
