China-based Betavolt Technology unveils the BV100, a nuclear battery with a proposed 50-year lifespan. It’s made from the nickel -63 isotope and diamond semiconductor material, ideal for the aerospace, medical device, MEMS system, drone, robot, and eventually, smartphone industries.
Unlike previous atomic battery designs, which were either too large or didn’t provide enough power for electronic devices, BV100 uses a layer of artificial diamond that acts as a semiconductor layer. Plus, the nickel isotope (nickel-63) also decays and produces energy. Betavolt claims these batteries are 10 times as energy dense as their lithium battery counterpart, while being able to store 3,300 megawatt-hours in a 1 gram battery. There is also no degradation of the battery, as there are no battery cycles. BB100 measures around 15 x 15 x 5 mm and generates 100 microwatts of electricity.
